“Anything you can automate is profitable.” With that in mind, we started working at CORROSION at the beginning of 2019 and we implemented Typical Manager. A year later we visited R&D Manager Jaap van der Spek and Sander Stortenbeker, Project Engineer and key user of Typical Manager. What do they say about Typical Manager and the Yellax approach?
.
The goals of CORROSION were clear: saving 1 FTE at the electrical engineering department so that this particular FTE could switch over to the R&D Department. How? By increasing the quality of the electrical schematics in AutoCad Electrical and gaining more efficiency in the engineering process. With this in mind, the implementation process started in the summer of 2019. Sander tells us that “For the implementation of Typical Manager, a consultant from Yellax came to our office about 5 to 6 times”. “Then we could get started with building the library ourselves. Our processes were already fairly standardized, yet not automated. In total, we spent around 500 hours on the full implementation.”
.
Typical Manager has been operational since the beginning of 2020. Sander: “We generate schematics using an import sheet, which we created in the past. This sheet is set up in the sales and calculation process and results as the project input for Typical Manager. In this way, we can generate about 90% of the AutoCAD schematics. ”
Jaap: “Typical Manager is certainly valuable to this process at CORROSION, given the high repeatability factor of our systems. In particular, we achieved the goal to save 1 FTE through this automation process and expanded our R&D activities. In addition, we had a margin of error of about 30% in the past. We have managed to reduce this to zero”.
.
‘’The biggest challenge in the implementation process was figuring out where to best store which data’’, Sander says. “But our goal has been achieved! Also because of many benevolent colleagues who were convinced that standardization and automation are important. We are therefore ready to deploy the system even more widely in the organization.”
.
Sander: “There are still some manual actions to be taken to generate the entire electrical design in AutoCAD Electrical. In our ideal world, the process is automated to such a great extent that when the sales department makes a calculation, we only have to press one single button during engineering to receive complete project documentation. 80% of the engineer’s work now is repetitive and can therefore be automated. A logical next step is therefore to generate documentation. “Anything you can automate is profitable!” Jaap adds.

CORROSION is an internationally recognized specialist in creative, sustainable, state-of-the-art solutions in the field of corrosion and fouling protection, located in Moerkapelle. For instance, think of protecting wind farms, ships and onshore & offshore applications. Partly due to their in-house laboratory; they are known worldwide for innovative solutions for corrosion and fouling-related issues.
